Winning their first title was impressive but the way CSK backed it up with a strong performance in the subsequent edition of the IPL was even better, In 2011, when two new teams were added to the IPL. The IPL Board announced that each franchise could keep no more than four players on their team, only three of whom could be Indian players, and the remaining international players would be put up for a mega auction. The team hired captain M.S. Dhoni, vice-captain Suresh Raina, Murali Vijay and all-purpose player Albie Morkel. In the tournament, they lost three of their first five games, leaving them at the bottom of the points table with ten teams. But then they won seven of their next eight games, finished second and made the playoffs. Then they beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore in Qualifier 1 by 43 points to advance to the finals. The two teams met again in the finals and CSK won again.

After a home game loss to the Delhi Daredevils, the team played a must-win game against Kings XI Punjab.  Thus, with seven wins in 14 matches, finished with the same number of points as the other three teams, resulting in two spots in the semifinals. Chennai placed third as they had the best run score among the four teams with 14 points. In the semifinals, the Super Kings scored a modest 142/7 in 20 overs against the reigning champions Deccan Chargers. 

In the finals, the Dhoni-led team faced the Mumbai Indians in a tough match. Suresh Raina was in his element, cracking 35 off 57 balls and bringing CSK to 168/5.CSK won by 22 points and lifted the IPL trophy for the first time. Suresh Raina was named Best Player.
