Features of betting on the US Open tennis tournament
How to pick a winner, why fear lingering matches and whether to bet on qualifiers at the US Open? Answers to these and other questions are in our feature on the season’s last Grand Slam tennis tournament.
US Open final betting
In the past 11 draws of the US Open, only on two occasions has the winner of the first set ended up losing the final match. In 2016, Stan Wawrinka took the second, third and fourth sets in a row, while in 2020, Dominic Thiem made a comeback from 0-2 down.
The situation is even more predictable in the women’s draw. At the end of the first set, the odds on the favourite’s victory drop to 1.10 and below. The exceptions here are incredibly rare: in 2020, Naomi Osaka drew against Victoria Azarenka, losing in the first set. It was the first time this had happened in 16 years.
Five-set winners fail
The US Open matches are played in late August and early September. At this time of year, the weather in New York is hot, putting an extra strain on the athletes.
In addition, acrylic hard courts are used at the US Open. The bounce rate is low and the flight path is predictable. The surface is equally suitable for attacking and defensive players, bridging the gap between favourites and underdogs. Matches are intense and the emphasis is on stamina and fitness.
Fatigue builds up towards the final and the statistics for five-set matches from the 1/32 finals onwards confirm this. In the last three US Opens, 28 men’s singles five-sets have been played. In 64% of cases, the winner fell in the next meeting.
If we ignore the underdog bets (with odds of 2.50 and above), the return on investment (ROI) is 20.1%. If we then exclude the unbetter bets below 1.30, the strategy will give us a ROI of 40%. The distance is modest, but we will note that each of the last three US Opens is profitable if you use this approach.
Betting on reaching the men’s singles final
Two weeks before the start of the US Open, the ATP Masters 1000 series tournament in Cincinnati kicks off, and the results are a good indication of the players’ form even before the US Open starts.
Three times in the last five years, one of the ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati finalists has reached the US Open final. And in 2018, Djokovic won both competitions altogether.
Total less in US qualifier matches
The last US Open champion from the US was Andy Roddick (2003). After that the Europeans pulled the blanket, and only in 2009 the Argentine Del Potro reminded us that tennis is also played over the ocean.
At home tournaments, two or three tennis players from the US make it to the final through qualifiers. Qualifiers are played to two set wins, often playing one match a day with little or no rest. In the main draw, those who play their first match at the tournament have a clear advantage.
Interesting: from 2015 to 2019, 11 local qualifiers made it to the 1/64th finals of the US Open main event. Only three of them made it to the next round. And the lion’s share of games ended 0-3.
In most cases, qualifiers are regarded as underdogs. But even when they are not, caution does not hurt. The case of Mitchell Kruger in 2018 is telling: the bookies had him as favourites, but all he could do was win one set. (And slightly ruin our ‘dry’ stats.)
The bottom line is this: 7 of the 11 meetings were won by those who went straight into the main draw, with a dry run. Another first-round meeting the qualifier won 3-0 (Ryan Harrison in 2016), that too played a TM.
The bookmakers’ odds for the TM (3.5) range from 1.30 to 3.00, there’s plenty to choose from. This is convenient for US Open live betting. There has been no qualification at the shortened US Open 2020 due to the pandemic, and over the previous five years, the return-on-interest (ROI) percentage for such bets was 39.8%.

US OPEN BETTING TENNIS FAQs
What can you recommend to conveniently follow the tournament?
The US Open has a basic scoring application for the tournament. It’s called IBM SlamTracker. The app will help you keep track of real-time match scores, shot statistics, and even point-by-point analysis of all events.
The features of this app include the ability to use player and ball status data, so you can even track parameters like “distance/point” and “pitch depth” if necessary. This data can be tied to a specific player, or to a specific match, or you can do it all at once! Of course, the app also has the usual statistics, including:
- Aces
- Unforced error
- And etc
IBM SlamTracker will help you even in the analysis of making a bet, because here there is a function to track the behavior of a tennis player in a specific situation. For example, a tennis player finds himself in a pressure situation in a match (losing in 2 sets, for example). Thanks to this feature, you will be able to use the historical statistics on this player in this situation, which is definitely useful information for making a decision on a winning bet.
The app is constantly being optimized and updated. For example, in 2018, the developers changed the interface design. The redesign allowed for a full overview of all live streaming for fans, and a separate interface visualizing the competitive flow of the match was added.
In addition to historical data on the tennis player’s behavior in a certain situation, the application uses predictive analytics from IBM (SPSS). Based on it, the Keys to the Match feature is a system that has been analyzing Slam Tennis data for 12 years. The analysis also includes:
- Analysis of historical matches between each other
- Analyzing players with a similar style of play
- Determining a successful strategy for each player based on the available data
What interesting facts do I need to know about the tournament?
